WINE COUNTRY
Tecate is the gateway to Mexico’s Wine Country, the Valle de Guadalupe. If you are starting from Tecate and driving south on Highway 3 towards Ensenada, the first winery you will come to is Vinos Tanama. Tanama means ‘Place of fertile ground, where water runs and oaks grow’, and it is all of that! At the small tasting room, you can begin your interesting day by tasting Tanama’s GZ cabernet sauvignon; Californio, a blend of tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon; Californio, carignane; and Tanama, a rosé made of Mision grapes.
Vinos Tanama is open on Saturday and Sunday, and wine tasting is by appointment only. For more information, visit
www.vinostanama.com.mx or email info@vinostanama.com.mx
LA RUMOROSA
East of Tecate, on the road to Mexicali, is this interesting solid rock mountain range. The scenery is breath-taking and during the winter, the snow-covered mountains are a winter wonderland. In the area, you’ll find the Vallecitos Site, an ancient
ceremonial place for several indigenous tribes, with cave paintings and a museum. The Alaska Camp museum was a military headquarters in the 1900s. And the restaurant La Cabana del Abuelo provides a good stopping and eating point.
RANCHO TECATE
On Highway 3, south of Tecate and on the road to Mexico’s Wine Country, the 650-hectare Rancho Tecate development has recently been re-dedicated by city and state officials, including Mayor of Tecate Donaldo Peñalosa, to become one of the most important developments in northern Baja. And have no doubt—this spectacular property is truly a tesoro escondido, a hidden treasure. With an historic hotel under renovation, hundreds of gnarled old oak trees, lakes abundant with fish- and bird-life, and vast rolling hills, the plan is to create a world-class resort and community of homes. Developer Roberto Valdez notes that Rancho Tecate will have its own vineyards, golf course, hiking and biking trails and a sense of the magical imbued by the lore and legend of the area.
