Rosarito recently celebrated two anniversaries, the 125th of its creation as a region and the 15th of its cityhood in a ceremony in Cinepolis at the Pabellon Grand center.
The region was created in 1885 with a land grant of about 48,000 acres. In 1995 it became Baja’s fifth city. Historic photos were displayed both in the lobby of the theater and the plaza outside.
The ceremony attended by officials and about 250 residents included a big screen presentation of the city’s history, mariachi music, speeches and awards presentations.
"It is important is to think of the achievements that Rosarito has had over the years and see that it has become a strong city,” said Mayor Hugo Torres.
Torres was leader of the effort that resulted in Rosarito becoming a city. He also was appointed to a three-year term as its first mayor and was elected to a second three-year term in 2007.
Torres in his speech also urged every resident, including parents and teachers, to work together to keep the city moving in the right direction and to choose the best leaders to help it do so.
Among those honored for their contributions were Jose Guadalupe Perez Garcia, a longtime resident and businessman; Jerry Lester, who has a foundation that helps children; Sofia Campos Rascon young medal-winning athlete; Rene Ortiz Campoy, for his contributions to the development of Rosarito.
Also Manuel P. Barbachano, a pioneer in development and tourism; Mario Melendez Ramon Reyes, for his teaching work. Al so recognized was Emiliano Zapata High School, whose students have made great achievements locally, regionally and nationally.
Recognitions also went to Jose Soto, Luis Enrique Sandoval Guizar, Perla Palafox, Beatriz Machado de Acevedo, Norberto Lopez Gilbert Armenta and Lucia Cortez.
