If you find yourself in the Tecate Plaza late one morning, your senses soothed by the rich fragrance of Mexican coffee and the gentle ruffling of leaves as doves duck under the shade canopy, then maybe you’re experiencing the magic of Daniel Reveles. It is here where Daniel finds inspiration for his novelas about the people, scents, sounds and tastes of Tecate.
A tagline on Enchiladas, Rice, and Beans, a book he authored in 1994, describes the novela as “Tales from Tecate, a Baja border town where miracles happen every day in ordinary lives…” This certainly captures the ‘magical realism’ for which Reveles is famous but not the laughter and love that ooze from Reveles’ talented mind.
What’s not humorous about a river that flows uphill and roosters who know how to crow in Spanish? And what’s not to adore about a writer who lives amongst the coyotes on a farflung rancho near Tecate, who spends an awful lot of time gazing at a stunning nude Diana in a dark local bar, and whose words cross a line – the borderline — creating a bridge between nations and peoples
.
Besides Enchiladas, Rice, and Beans, Reveles has authored Salsa and Chips; Tequila, Lemon, and Salt, and Guacamole Dip. And, by the way, one of the places where you can buy his books is in Tecate’s Bar Turistico Diana, where Daniel has proudly autographed the belly buttons of three happy purchasers. The characters that Daniel Reveles writes about are portrayed by Tecate artist Gabriel Adame. This painting, which was selected to be the cover of Reveles’ book Tequila, Lemon, and Salt, also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Bar Diana in 1997. It is part of a series entitled Monitos Curados that Adame has been working on since 1990, reflecting the life and people of Tecate. Adame was born in Tecate. His father was the first dentist in town, and Adame pursues the same profession. He began painting 21 years ago and is the first alumnus of the art school of the Tecate campus of the University of Baja California. He and his wife, also a dentist, have two children—Diana, a psychologist, and Juan Pablos who is, naturally, a dentist.
